the earliest records of a population on the peninsula date back to the end of the 2nd millennium BC, when the Thracian tribe Melsians established the first settlement called Mesambria. In the 6th century BC Greek colonists from Megara turned Mesambria into a polis, making it an important commercial and cultural center.
the city prospered as a major trading center and port in the region. In the 1st century BC Messambria became part of the Roman Empire, leading to the development of urban infrastructure and public buildings. In the 9th century, the city was annexed to the First Bulgarian Kingdom under Khan Krum, but it often changed its rulers in the following centuries.
